Kayaking Bio Bay: Fajardo Puerto Rico

The first thing you notice is the wake — a luminous, emerald path of foam lingering below the stern.

About 45 minutes from the El Yunque National Rainforest, you can find the small town of Fajardo, which is home to one of the few Bioluminescent Lagoons in the world.

Fajardo is known for it’s famous “kayaking Bio Bay” trips, and there’s a reason why.  Imagine paddling a two person kayak into pure darkness, dodging boats and waves, trying to avoid tree trunks and limbs, all while trying to keep your kayak in a single file line.  This is what you will go through in order to reach the bioluminescent water and it is so worth it. Getting there is half the fun.

Since the flash of your camera will hide the glowing blue water, Bio Bay isn’t the easiest place to get pictures. We can still show you some pictures of us looking super nerdy in our life jackets though..
