1 Day in Salzburg: Here’s What To Fit In (Itinerary)

1 day in salzburg

One large demanding fortress with an alpine backdrop sets Salzburg apart from other cities, attracting more and more tourists every year. Unfortunately I only had 1 day in Salzburg, but between touring the fortress and eating as many sausages as possible, I really did stay busy. Here’s my 1 day itinerary for Salzburg below:

1. Stroll through the MIRABELL GARDENS

Salzburg is a smaller city, so there is no doubt that you will find yourself walking through the colorful winding gardens of the Mirabell Palace at some point during your stay. This was my first stop during my 1 day in Salzburg (on route to the fortress of course). The gardens themselves are stunning and very well maintained, not to mention they have a great view of the fortress. If you’re a photographer, head here for your money shot.

2.  Oogle Over Old Architecture & Shops in ALTER MARKT SQUARE

Alter Markt is smack in the middle of Salzburg’s Old City. Here you will find streets lined with colorful 17th century houses, and an ancient pharmacy with piles of old jars labeled in Latin. It’s hard not to feel slightly Harry Potter-esque in this old shop.

3. Travel Back in Time on GETREIDEGASSE STREET

Getriedegasse Street is the busy shopping street in the Old Town section of Salzburg. It was also the place where Mozart was born (Getreidegasse 9 to be exact).

4. Climb to the top of the HOHENSALZBURG FORTRESS

Hohensalzburg is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe. Due to it’s unique positioning, it remained unconquered by enemy troops throughout it’s entire history.

TIP: Once you reach the fortress, be sure to take the tour.  The inside of the fortress isn’t that impressive, but the greatest view of Salzburg is obtained by climbing to the top of the lookout.

5. Grab a KAISSE KRANER from a street vendor.

A cheese filled sausage. Heaven on Earth.

6. Hang a Lock on the MAKARTSTEG BRIDGE

The Makartsteg bridge is another great place to view the city and to take landscape photos. It is also one of the famous “love lock bridges” of Europe. I would buy a lock beforehand, as the generic red ones they sell in Salzburg can be pricey (I fell for it, as did many other people).

7. Splurge at HANGAR 7:

Not only is this place known for it’s excellent cuisine, but you can also view all of the Redbull planes and vehicles, including the one that launched Felix Baumgartner into the stratosphere for the worlds highest skydive.
