Flights on Qatar Airlines are really cheap right now, which means you will likely have the option of a long layover in Doha if you book with them. So, what can you get up to with a long layover in Doha Qatar?

Walk It Out on the CORNICHE

Stretch out your cramped legs from the flight at Doha’s waterfront promenade.  Walking the Corniche will bring you 7 kilometers along the bay overlooking old wooden boats and the Doha skyline.  If you only have a short layover in Doha, definitely fit this walk in. You can get an amazing shot of the cityscape, whether you visit during the night or day.

Head Out on a DHOW TRIP

Rent one of Doha’s traditional wooden sailing boats for a trip around the bay. There are a variety of boats that you can rent from the Corniche. Most of them are near the Museum of Islamic Art. Head here during sunset for the best views (and maybe even add an additional barbecue dinner to your trip with classic Middle Eastern fare)!

Get Lost In SOUQ WAQIF

Souq Waqif was one of my favorite parts of Doha. It’s really fun to stroll through this maze like market place in search of crafts, spices, and souvineers. There’s even a section with puppies (even though I hate to see them in cages :(). There’s also a ton of restaurants here if you are hungry for something other than airplane food.

Wander into the  MUSEUM OF ISLAMIC ART

At the end of the Corniche, the modern looking white building on the water is the Museum of Islamic Art.  Inside you will find one of the leading collections of Islamic Art in the world. Even if you’re not an art fan, go to take a look at the building. The architecture is worth a view. Also, admission is free!

Grab an Elaborate BRUNCH

Brunch is big in Doha, and you’ll find buffets with smorgasboards of seafood, champagne, sushi, cheese plates, salad bars, and a lot more. I set out for some eggs benedict, and ended up with a plate full of crab legs.

Here is a list of the best brunches in Doha.

Discover Luxury at THE PEARL

The Pearl is Doha’s artificial island with yacht lined marinas and upscale hotels, boutiques, and restaurants. It’s often described as the “Arabian Riviera”.

Adventure into the SAND DUNES

It’s surprising I didn’t do this during my stay, but that’s because I already had a dune bashing adventure in Dubai.  If you would like to do a desert tour in Doha, here’s a few ideas.

Is Doha Safe?

I know whenever I visit the Middle East, I get questions asking me if it’s safe. Yes, visiting Doha is safe and has very little crime. I visited alone. The most dangerous thing for me was the heat, be sure to hydrate!

What Should You Wear?

Although there is no dress code for foreigners, it is better to wear modest clothing. Foreign visitors are expected to dress sensitively to Islamic culture. This means no shorts for men and no shorts or tank tops for women. I had a romper that I draped a shall over:

And About ALCOHOL

Since Qatar is a strict Muslim state, the only place that alcohol is served is at 4 and 5 star hotels. Expect to shell out some serious cash.

If you’re visiting on a FRIDAY

Starting around noon on Friday, everything shuts down for the holy day (with the exception of hotel facilities). After sundown on Saturday, everything reopens.
